Resumo

The European Extremely Large Telescope is the top priority of European ground-based astronomy. When it starts operations in late 2024 it will be the world's largest optical-infrared telescope. I have been serving on the E-ELT Project Science Team (a cross-disciplinary working group that supports the E-ELT programme during the construction phase, providing input and advice to ESO and the E-ELT programme office) since its creation in May 2012. In this cookie I will present a pedagogical introduction to the E-ELT scientific goals and some of the technical challenges involved, and will also describe the current status of the construction. Time permitting I may also offer some thoughts on the joys and challenges of international billion Euro level scientific projects.
