Dear Sir or Madam,

We are pleased to invite you to the workshop on “Leveraging new funding opportunities for African-European Radio Astronomy Partnerships ‒ Realising the objectives of the European Parliament’s Written Declaration 45/2011”, in Brussels. The workshop will take place on May 29, 2012 at the Stanhope Hotel, in Brussels.

Radio astronomy is a priority science discipline for Africa, in which African countries are investing concertedly, and is also a domain of strategic importance for research and innovation in Europe. The “Leveraging new funding opportunities for African-European Astronomy partnerships ‒ Realising the objectives of the European Parliament’s Written Declaration 45/2011” workshop will present recent policy developments in EU-Africa cooperation relevant for cooperation in radio astronomy and explore new opportunities that such partnerships can offer not only to the scientific community but also to industry, particularly the ICT, energy and manufacturing sectors.

During the workshop, African and EU policy-makers will discuss the evolving policy basis for radio astronomy cooperation between the two continents, whilst representatives from the scientific community and industry will present success stories of existing cooperation.  The specific goal of the workshop will be to discuss how new African-European radio astronomy and related cooperation initiatives can best be supported by the portfolio of funding instruments available to support implementation of the Joint Africa-EU Strategy (the formal intergovernmental framework for cooperation between the two continents.)

The workshop will also mark the launch of the African-European Radio Astronomy Platform (AERAP), a new stakeholder forum convened to define priorities for radio astronomy cooperation between Africa and Europe and match them with available funding instruments.  AERAP will be structured around a network of public and private sector stakeholders, especially from the scientific community and industry. The dialogue facilitated by AERAP will, thus, be aimed at developing and updating agendas for African-European radio astronomy cooperation and supporting the implementation of partnership initiatives.

“Leveraging new funding opportunities for African-European Astronomy partnerships - Realising the objectives of the European Parliament’s Written Declaration 45/2011” workshop will take place in Brussels on May 29th2012.

Registration to the workshop is now open.  The event is free of charge but participants are expected to cover their travel and accommodation cost.
